How does money figure in this text?
I just started to read the book Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles, I've actually only read 4 chapters of the book and already there are lessons. Alex is a senior in High School and the same thing with Brittany. Brittany is the pom squad queen, everyone thinks her life is perfect, but in reality it's not really like that. All her mom cares about is being perfect and trying your hardest to look better than everyone else. In Brittany's family its all about appearance. In Alex's family it's way different, Alex is a gang member, from the Latino Bloods. Him and his siblings fight all the time and you never hear the end of it, his mom doesn't care what he wears and doesn't really care about anything. They both come from way different worlds, different families and way different life's.
Brittany's mom is all about money. To me, it seems like Brittany doesn't need money or great clothes or great things or a great life, but that doesn't matter at all to her mother. Her mother is the type of women who is all about money. Her mom is pretty stuck up about her children's appearance. Her mom is a stuck up mean women. "Hate the pants, love the belt," says Brittany's mom. To me thats pretty mean to say to your daughter, like what mom says that to their child. Clothes now is the way of expression your individuality. Brittany's mom needs to know that it isn't all about looks and whether or not people like you. At least Brittany knows how to go along with what her mother says.
Alex has a whole other side with money. To me it seems like his family isn't as wealthy as Brittany's family. "Since I share a room with my eleven- and fifteen-year-old brothers, there's no escape except the little privacy a lone pillow can give."Alex tells us how he has no privacy at all and that he only has two bedrooms for, 4 people living in his family. His mom in one room and the rest with him. Alex's mom also doesn't really have money and it seems like thats the problem they mostly have.
