The Drummer Boy Of Shiloh

Think of a time when you felt left out or scared for what was coming next in your life. Joby in The Drummer Boy Of Shiloh by Ray Bradbury was just a kid who ran away to be in the war. Joby feels left out and not safe. Throught the story the general comes to Joby and makes him feel so much better. He makes him feel welcomed and the generals there for him. Joby has a lot of fears about the war.

Joby faces a lot of fears in this short story. Throught the short story Joby feels that since he has no shield that he is not important and he doesnt feel safe. "Me, thought the boy. I got only one drum and two sticks to beat it, and no sheild." Joby is thinking about how he just has a drum and nothing to protect himself with . He still turns out scared. To the ending of the story, Joby realizes that he does have a shield. " If he, Joby, beat slow tomorrow, the hear would beat slow in the men. If he beat a sure, steady, ever faster rhythm, then, then, their knees would come in a long line down over that hill," His drum was his shield all along. He was the one that made the war going.

Joby faces other problems too. He was scared for what was coming next, meaning the war. " You want to cry some more, go on ahead. I did the same last night." The general told this to Joby. The general was there for Joby. You would probably be scared if you were in the war, but then what if someone came along to help you and be there for you when you were going through a rough time. The general was like an angel to Joby. Showing him that he shouldnt be afraid and that he was protected all along.

Joby became a strong character at the ending of the short story. Even thought he felt unwelcomed and not safe; however, he overcame all those feelings, fears, and managed to realize that he was the heart of the army and he was very important. It was all thanks to the general for making Joby the character he was at the end of the short story.
