Charlie in the book doesn't really pay attention to himself like he should. In the book, Charlie did everything for Sam and Patrick, meaning he would do a lot of stuff for them. He would leave his house at 3 in the morning sometimes just to go see them or hang out with them. I'm not saying its bad for him to hang out with his friends but you also need time for yourself, he needs sleep and he doesn't really get it because of them. Another example for that is that he's starting to do bad things in his life. He's starting to smoke and drink. The kid is just a freshmen in high school and its not safe for him, in my opinion. Many people should stay clean and because he started seeing them smoke he got into the habit of doing it too. Im not so sure that he should be trying to follow them, yeah they could be the best of friends but why follow your friends if you are your own person.
Charlie has a couple of problems though with his friends, which i do feel bad about. While in a party with some of his friends, he is dared to go up to the prettiest girl in the room and kiss her. He had a girlfriend though, and she was there, but he was in love with his best friend Sam, so he went to Sam instead of his girlfriend and kissed her. Everyone at the party got upset after that and they left him all alone. They stopped talking to him for at least a couple of months. I don't understand why they stopped talking to him if he was always there for them. Its time for him to understand that even though he's always there for his friends they won't always be there for him. They have their own lives and they will care about themselves more.
Charlie is a very good character in my opinion. In the book he shows a lot of struggles and rising levels in his life. Charlie needs to worry about his school work and his life at home with family. Friends shouldn't be his #1 priority but I'm sure that his friends do love him, but he also needs some alone time to be himself for once, his real self.
